Top Myths About Owning Your First House Today

Just because people tell you something, doesn’t mean it’s true.

We want to dispel some of the misconceptions about buying a home…

The home-buying experience can be complicated, terrifying and littered with a lot of misunderstanding. Sometimes, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction.

“You just bought that home dream home. You’ll love it. You can’t wait to move in.”

Now you’re settled in. But wait… you’ve got to buy a lawnmower. Do you know which end of a rack to use? How about a weed eater? Or even how to maintain a lawnmower?

I’m talking about yard maintenance. Pruners, for example. Do you know how to prune that bush out front? This is yard work and it’s inevitable when you buy your first home.

“When I first bought a home, yard work was not my favorite thing. Then I started to love it.”

Myths

I mean I really love it these days. I have my own garden and I do my own pruning. We trim grapes in my little vineyard. Together we plant seeds in the greenhouse and then transplant them into the flower beds. I love it!

It’s a great thing and it’s so relaxing, but are you prepared for it? It’s a mindset. Start with a 360-degree look around their yard and make sure you’ve got your bases covered when it comes to yard work and maintenance.

Have you thought about maintenance?

Do you know what caulking is? When you see your caulking around your bathtub start to deteriorate, do you know how to scrape it up and treat it?

You might need to learn how to fix that faucet. It’s true, you become a handyman! When you own a home you don’t want to let someone else always do it. There is satisfaction in learning how to do these projects, and it’s going to save you some money.

Your HVAC system might be a little bit too big for the average handyman. Even me, I’m not going to replace my Heating and Air System. It would be better to hire a company to do it for you.

There are so many things that are going to break in your home. You’re going to have to maintain the basic bones of the home.

Myths
Cousin Eddie & his RV

Did you read the CC&Rs before you moved in that fancy neighborhood?

Some neighborhoods won’t allow you to put up a flag. If you’re planning a remodeling project, they’re not going to allow you to put a dumpster in front of your house. Other neighborhoods won’t even allow you to park your car on the street if you’re remodeling. Where you going to put that debris??

CC&Rs are a crap shoot. That’s why I like established neighborhoods. Of course, your neighbor might be Cousin Eddie with his RV that he’s going to live out of until Christmas. You just don’t know.

These are some of the Myths about Buying a Home for the First Time.

It’s very important to use a home inspector. They check out your energy system, the water system, the sinks, the faucets, the toilet, the landscaping, the foundation, the roofing, the siding, and more. We advise you to make sure that these things are good before you buy the home.

My best advice to conquer the myths; think about Warranties, Energy-Efficiency, Insurance, Neighbors, Technology, and Renovations.
