The National Association of Home Builder’s quarterly Housing Trends Report wants prospective home buyers to estimate how many of the homes available in their markets they believe they can afford.

The results are not suprisng. Most home buyers estimate they can afford fewer than half the homes for sale in their markets. That’s in the final quarter of 2018

That percentage has slowly been dropping year-over-year. Previously, 4 out of 5 buyers said they could afford half the homes a year earlier.

There’s good news too, because a growing number feel they can buy a majority of the homes for-sale in their neighborhood.

Affordability seems to be an issue for all age groups. A majority of buyers in each generation say they can afford fewer than half the homes available in their markets.
